It wasn’t that many years ago people did not know where in the world Birtinya was.
Today, the world is beating a path coming to its doorstep.
Birtinya is planned to be home to the town centre of the beachside area known collectively as Kawana.
It is the location of the $1.8 billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital that forms the heart of the health hub spreading around it.
As such it is seeing a rush of development with Stockland’s $5 billion Oceanside Kawana health, retail, commercial, education and residential hub that is set to be a new world-class destination for the Sunshine Coast.
The name Birtinya is reportedly an aboriginal word meaning ‘neighbouring’. It was proposed by the development company Alfred Grant in 1960.
Birtinya is built around Lake Kawana, which includes a 2km buoyed course for flat water competitions.
Sunshine Coast Stadium is on its eastern shore and this, together with surrounding facilities, hosts sporting events of all shapes and sizes.
The Lake Kawana Community Centre is also located beside the lake on Sportsmans Drive together with Kawana State College.
Innovation Way on the western shore forms a heavyweight professional precinct that includes the Kawana Private Hospital.
New land releases at Birtinya at Oceanside have been fast-tracked to keep pace with buyer demand.
Residential waterfront lots are selling quickly while house and land packages, terrace homes and land are designed to suit a variety of budgets and lifestyles.
Home sites range in size from 250sqm to 561sqm.
Surrounded by waterways and with kilometres of waterfront cycling and walking paths, the community has a wide range of quality home sites for sale which border natural parklands as well as waterfront addresses.
In addition to the new waterfront and neighbourhood residential lots, the approved plans also include up to 426 apartments plus a range of parks and pedestrian and cycle paths, including the continuation of the walkable waterfront path around Lake Kawana.
Development of the Kawana area dates back to the 1970s, but things really ramped up from the late 1990s and onwards when Lensworth were involved in the master planned development, new estates were opened up, people wanted to live on or near the water and housing expectations increased dramatically.
We have also seen the emergence of some great restaurants and cafes in the immediate area.
Significant investment and growth has taken place in the Birtinya area since the 1990s.
The Birtinya area didn’t just come out of the ground overnight, the Kawana Waters master plan certainly helped set the platform for the stunning residential communities, as well as the commercial, industrial, sporting and medical precincts which are dotted around the area.
Sport tourism is a real growth area for the Coast, Stockland Park plays host to a number of local, state and national sporting events and the proposed Lake Kawana Community and High Performance Sports Hub will be another important asset which will help retain local athletes and attract individuals and teams to the area.
